Custom Scleral Lenses
Sometimes, traditional contact lenses are not the solution for your unique visual needs. Scleral contact lenses can be an excellent option for patients with complex issues like dry eye, keratoconus, corneal transplants, corneal scarring, and more.
Customized Scleral lenses like our posEYEdon lens are also an excellent option for patients with unstable, poor vision, or dryness in standard contact lenses and for athletes who want high-quality visual sharpness and stability.
We are Boise’s contact lens experts, and we want to help address your unique visual needs through scleral lenses. Contact us to schedule your comprehensive contact lens exam to see if scleral lenses are right for you.
Book AppointmentA Closer Look at Scleral Lenses
Scleral lenses are larger than traditional contacts and rest on the sclera, or white, of your eyes. These lenses are designed to vault your cornea’s surface, landing gently on the sclera. This space between the lens and your cornea is filled with a soothing fluid, providing all day moisture to your cornea and relief for dry eyes. Slightly larger than regular soft lenses, scleral contact lenses exhibit minimal movement as we blink. This provides remarkable comfort and extremely stable, crisp vision.
With conditions like keratoconus, corneal scarring, corneal transplants and others, glasses and traditional contact lenses often fail to provide adequate vision correction. Scleral contact lenses can provide unbeatable visual clarity in these cases.
We primarily use Valley Contax for our scleral lenses.
All You Need to Know About Scleral Lenses
Our team will walk you through the scleral lens process, including proper insertion, removal, and maintenance. We are more than happy to address any questions or concerns you may have.
Scleral Contact Insertion
Scleral lenses can be applied in 2 different ways. The first is the tripod method, where the index finger, middle finger, and thumb come together to form a tripod formation. The second method is to use the DMV application tool, the larger bulb tool in your kit.
First, remove the lens from the soaking solution and clean the front surface with a GP-approved cleaner. Next, you can rinse the lens with preservative-free saline. You’ll then lean your head down over the Custom Stable mirror and gently pull your lower lid down to apply the lens.
Make sure to blink slowly to settle the lens onto the center of your eye.
Scleral Contact Removal
Scleral lenses can be removed using the small suction cup removal tool provided in your Custom Stable lens care kit.
First, you can apply a small amount of preservative-free saline to the suction cup, then lean forward slightly into your mirror and gently apply some pressure to the outer portion of the lens. It’s important to never remove the lens from the exact center.
Next, use a daily cleaner approved for gas-permeable lenses as directed. Rinse the cleaner from the lens using preservative-free saline and place the lens back in your Custom Stable case. Store the lenses overnight and enjoy your lenses in the morning!
Proper Lens Care
Contact lens hygiene is essential. Handling and storing your lenses in a clean environment, with clean hands, tools, and cases, is important.
Be sure to wash your hands with a mild soap that does not contain moisturizers, and do not use tap water to clean your lenses. Using the solution provided for your specific lenses is crucial for the best hygiene and results.
